Kulter is growing up in public
I overheard a conversation last night at Kulter. Someone pointed out that galleries are always so difficult to visit: “You enter, you look at the work and then you get caught by silence. And then... you leave. Kulter presents its works in a different matter. The music, food and drinks make you go around the place three or four times.”
And it’s true... the works presented, benefited from that extra time around. Just to look into the proces of making, just to admire it more. The large drawings by Jorrit Paaijmans for instance look like prints, but aren’t. The sculpture by Thijs Wieman looks static and the paintings by Julie Dassaud are graphic. But look again and you see that the drawings are made by hand, the sculpture is moving and the paintings pull you in. That’s what happened with the music too. I was stunned by a clarinet piece by Jacob te Veldhuis. Or better, I was stunned by the performance of clarinettist Michel Marang. So much joy in playing such a heavy piece, based on a poem by William Blake.
After that the Amsterdam based Klusteam played its sad tones to the dumb films of Buster Keaton. The hilarious film was countered and taken over by melancholic guitar and live samples. We all woke up to the sound of the drum...
And then we ate and drank. And we ate and drank.
Just enough time to see the artisan jewellery and couture of Patrizia Thomazo and listen to the ‘figurative’ pop music of Gram.
We’ll be back for sure. Kulter#04 is not planned yet, but the organisers told me they will continue in August. “Ijs en weder dienende” as they say here in Holland....
