Jenna Knapp, our artist-in-residence from Milwaukee [Wisconsin] is for the first time in Europe.
In Amsterdam just as much as in Milwaukee, she puzzles with her two main interests and purposes: inventing simple notation systems to stimulate spontaneous choreography interventions in the public space and a long engagement in social causes that topically has become even more relevant since the death of Mike Brown in Ferguson [Missouri] and many other unarmed young black men across the country [including Dontre Hamilton in her home city].

Island Research: Milwaukee to Amsterdam
“Red Arrow Park is an island. An island in the middle of the downtown business district of Milwaukee. An island that is surrounded by offices, businesses, boutiques, restaurants, performance venues, parking meters, and parking ramps. An island where employees take their lunch break on a park bench to catch some fresh air away from their office. An island dotted with a modest amount of trees and grass amongst the concrete city.
Red Arrow Park is an island. An island of people lifting their voices up for justice in the valley of Milwaukee’s tallest buildings. An island often unnoticed by the people in their cars driving home from work, yet gains recognition when the media makes people’s pain a spectacle. An island floating closely to the ship that is City Hall, yet remains ignored by the people occupying that ship. An island that is Dontre Hamilton’s final resting ground, Ground Zero. An island that carries a burden so heavy that sometimes we wonder how it has yet to sink.
When comparing Amsterdam’s use of public space to my own city of Milwaukee, there is a greater sense of community trust here. While exploring Amstelpark, I came across the labyrinth that is situated on its own island; this playful participatory game, that leads you right back to where you began, contrasts the use of public space in Milwaukee greatly. To keep public parks safe [by governments definition] there must be surveillance cameras and many light posts monitoring the public. The labyrinth on the other hand is an island, separated from the rest of the park by water and light and symbolizes great trust in the public.” Jenna Knapp
Join HEAM for a Public Engagement Choreography Intervention
Jenna Knapp’s most recent project at home, HEAM [Highway Excursion Agency of the Midwest], includes a product she invented that encourages drivers on the interstate to pull over, refresh their mind and body, and dance using the Roadside Engagement Choreography Cards. Here, at Saturnalian Solstice Festival of Lights, we will explore a similar version for night time in the park, using lights to activate the group movement choreographies.

Above Right: Inspired by flag signals that communicate between long distances, Knapp shoots color tests in the labyrinth at Amstelpark to explore
being seen in a public space that is meant to conceal.
