The Surrealists movement artists and writers, who advanced the "cadavre exquis" believed, the chance encounter as a disruption of rationality, and a product of a shared unconscious. Cadavre Exquis (also known as "Exquisite Corpse", begun possibly 1918 in France) a collaborative image and word game, in which players draw/write on sheet of paper, folded it to conceal what they had done, continue an indication of what they drew/wrote into the next area, and passed it to the next player to link more drawing/writing. The entire work revealed only when completely unfolded.
This exhibition presents cadavre exquis (CE) works created using traditional approaches (drawing, collage), and works by contemporary artists who use video, sound, poetry, and embroidery as means of CE collaboration. Including the video works of Bernard Dumaine (FR) and Pinina Podestà (IT). Dumaine can be considered a CE master for his over 9 years of CE collaborations with artists world-wide (some of this 2D CE works are also on exhibit), whose works part of recently published book “Miximages – Exquisite Corpses“, he is also co-founder of DeviantArt group "The Exquisite Corpse". Podestà' video works are explorations engaging Surrealist concepts and constructions. The computer and digital software are utilized as creative tools to construct CEs by some artists and writers in this exhibition. Ton Haring (NL) creates CE with both video and sound. Artist and poet Helene Ruiz (US) regularly plays CE by both internet and "snail-mail", she established "The Resurrection of the Exquisite Corpse" at redbubble.com, and has collaborated in CE with various artists.
Works in Cadavre Exquis Expanded were created by collaborating artist/writer groups of 2, 3, and 4 some who have never met in-person or, never worked together previously or, who reside in different countries.
This exhibition also encouraged the creation of new works by artists and writers. As part, Kulter will offer CE Lab, public and artist/writer workshops and projects to create works using cadavre exquis and other Surrealist game methods. Selected works from workshops and projects will be included in closing event for exhibition.
