Kulter. #11
11 is a team. 11 players trying to beat their adversaries. Using their different compentences to form a squad that is more than the sum of all parts.
Maybe that is why Kulter #11 was called Under Influence. In some way or another all artist are Under Influence. By their environment, by other artists, by their background. Making them better, giving them new insights, but sometimes also making them struggle to find their place.
Painter Carel Bergtop is inspired by the poetry of Anjez Winkler. Her enigmatic spoken word performance led to a live painting. We as an audience were invited to watch up close and personal through the lens of a camera. In two hours a work unfolded before our eyes.
Guitarist Maarten Kooijman, is by some called the best pop guitarist of the Netherlands. He shared his favourite songs and played a selection chosen by the audience. Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Prince Billie, and Johnny Cash (who got the most votes). Maybe next time we can also hear some of his own work to see where these songs have led him?
Two artists were directly influenced by the place itself. Amir Salfiti painted the walls of two back rooms. His graphic work has an industrial feel to it, that contrasts nicely with the somewhat run down environment. Amir said it was his best work yet. Please drop by to see it before the rooms are repainted (visits are on appointment 06-17404955). Evelien Nijeboer used Kulter as an atelier for the last two weeks. It resulted in a large painting of 2x3 metres. Her work is intruiging. The landscapes she paints, seem to have no point, and that is the strenghth. So much work collapses under the heavy load of a conceptual or theoretic idea. Nijeboer just wants to share her gentle astonishment.
There is a saying that says that beauty comes from trying to find something, without knowing what you are looking for. More and more it can be the motto for Kulter, proeflokaal on the Kinkerstraat.
