Kulter.#01
Opening Mountains & Spaces | 28.06.09
I overheard a conversation between poet antoine de kom and painter Erik de Bree at Kulter#01 last night. The big energetic painting of De Bree is called Pink Mountain Top, De Kom’s poetry refers to The Tafelberg. They found comfort in their little misunderstanding. Referrals to music and places.
Why is this interesting? The works@ Kulter#01 had one common denominator. Landscapes. But what is a landscape? Is it a representation of a real physical environment? Is it a metaphorical association or maybe a music partiture?
Kulter#01 had no labels. But the works were anything but untitled. I saw this in the photography of Julie Dassaud. The landscape is subject to the image, as if the artist has formed the landscape to fit her image. No Photoshop people! Just landscape and filters. German painter Thomas Monses distilles his landscapes, he squeezes them like an orange, drinks the juice and produces new imagery in the process. Aquil Copier is the well known painter of the lot. He chose to show some new works that elaborate on his earlier works which are more graphic. In the small paintings, Copier manages not only to create landscapes through material (thick layers of wax and oilpainting), but he shows us a an insight of what’s on the other side. Inverted mountains on the sea shore, light reflecting on the smallest detail.
Finally there was a photograph by French artist Laurence Aegerter. Her image of a girl standing in front of a surely well known painting seemed the odd one out.
Kulter#02 will take place on Saturday and Sunday from 17:00 PM
